Preparation
- In a large bowl, combine the warm water, granulated sugar, and salt. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
- Add the flour to the yeast mixture and mix until a dough starts to form. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Cooking
- Preheat air fryer to 450°F (230°C).
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add the baking soda.
- Roll the risen dough into ropes and cut into bite-sized pieces.
- Boil the pretzel bites in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment.
- Brush each bite with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse sea salt.
- Arrange in the air fryer basket in a single layer and bake for 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
- Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
For best results, let water reach 110°F for yeast activation. Knead until smooth and allow the dough to rise in a warm spot. For variations, consider adding garlic powder or cheese seasoning to the dough.
