  • 1/2 teaspoon 1/2 teaspoon baking soda For rise.

  • 1/4 cup 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips Optional, adds richness.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch square baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mash the ripe bananas until mostly smooth.
  3. Stir in the applesauce, honey (or maple syrup), and vanilla until the mixture is shiny.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together the whole wheat flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture into the wet mixture, stirring until no flour streaks remain. Fold in the dark chocolate chips if using.
  6. Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan, smoothing out the top.
Baking
  1. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean.
  2. Allow the brownies to cool in the pan before cutting into squares.

Notes

For best results, use very ripe bananas and avoid overmixing once the flour is added. Store brownies in an airtight container at room temperature or refrigerate for longer freshness.
