Ingredients

For the Soaking
  • 1 cup Buttermilk (or milk with lemon juice)
For the Coating
  • 1 cup Flour (substitute with gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option)
  • 1 tbsp Paprika
  • 1 tsp Garlic Powder
  • 1 tsp Onion Powder
  • 0.5 tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
For the Onions
  • 2 medium Sweet Onions (like Vidalia)
  • 1 spray Cooking Spray/Oil (as needed for a crispy exterior)

Method

Preparation
  1. Trim the tops and bottoms off the sweet onions. Carefully slice the onions into quarters without cutting all the way through, creating a bloom effect.
  2. Soak the onions in the buttermilk for at least 10 minutes to enhance their sweetness and tenderness.
Create the Coating
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Whisk the ingredients together until they are thoroughly mixed.
Coat the Onions
  1. Remove one onion from the buttermilk, allowing any excess to drip off. Dip it into the seasoned flour mixture, ensuring every exposed part is well coated. Repeat the process with the second onion.
Air Frying
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C) for several minutes.
  2. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray. Place the coated onions in the basket without overcrowding. Lightly spray the tops with cooking oil.
  3. Air fry the onions for about 12-15 minutes, flipping them halfway through to ensure they brown evenly. The onions are done when they are golden brown and crispy.
  4. Check for doneness; look for a crispy, golden exterior and a soft, tender interior.

Notes

To enhance flavor, soak onions in buttermilk and flip halfway for even browning. For variations, consider other spices or onion types.
