Ingredients

Onion Preparation
  • 2 large large onions Choose fresh, firm onions for the best texture.
Coating Mixture
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour Can be substituted with a gluten-free flour blend.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds a flavorful kick.
  • 1 teaspoon paprika Provides mild spiciness.
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
Batter Ingredients
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk Helps tenderize the onions and adds flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Begin by peeling the onions and slicing them into thin rings, about ¼ inch thick.
  2. Place the sliced onions in a bowl and cover them with buttermilk. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes.
Coating
  1. In another bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper.
  2. After soaking, lift the onions from the buttermilk, letting any excess drip off. Dip each ring into the flour mixture, ensuring they are well coated.
Cooking
  1. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes.
  2. Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray and arrange the onion rings in a single layer without overlapping.
  3. Spray the tops of the onion rings lightly with cooking spray, then air fry for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through.
  4. Once golden brown and crispy, carefully remove the onions and let them cool slightly on a wire rack.

Notes

For best results, slice onions evenly and avoid overcrowding the air fryer. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for 1-2 days.
